Endoscopy (Gastroscopy/Colonoscopy)

Endoscopy is performed under either a sedation or general anaesthetic. It is a day procedure that occurs in hospital.

Gastroscopy

This involves introducing a scope that inspects the oesophagus, stomach and first part of the small bowel. Biopsies are routinely taken, as well as when any abnormalities are encountered. It is a quick procedure, only taking 5-10 minutes.

Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy requires bowel preparation prior to the procedure and clear fluids orally the day prior to the procedure. The preparation instructions will be provided to you after your initial consult.

The procedure involves introducing a scope up into the rectum to inspect the colon, and sometimes the end of the small bowel. We look for lesions, such as polyps, and these are excised at the time of the procedure.

Recovery

You will be given something to eat and drink immediately after the procedure. Dr Gillespie will come talk with you once you have woken up, and generally follow up is scheduled for 1-2 weeks to discuss any pathology.

The Patient Journey

Book an appointment

Call or email Dr Gillespie’s rooms to book an appointment. You will need a referral from your GP or specialist if you would like a Medicare rebate.

Consult

You'll meet with Dr Gillespie to discuss your history and what options might be right for you. This is usually in person but telehealth is available, especially for rapid access endoscopy referrals.

Book in

Our team can discuss with you the option of being booked as a public or private patient.

Pre-endoscopy prep

If you are having a colonoscopy, you will be placed on a clear liquid diet the day beforehand. You will also need to take bowel prep to clear the large bowel beforehand. Instructions will be provided upon booking.

For a gastroscopy, you only need to fast from midnight.

Endoscopy

You will be admitted on the day of surgery and the hospital will provide fasting instructions the day prior.

A cannula will be placed by the anaesthetist to administer your sedation. You will be asleep for the endoscopy.

Follow up

Dr Gillespie will come talk to you in recovery once you are awake.

Generally a phone call is booked for 1-2 weeks post endoscopy to discuss any pathology.

If you had any polyps removed at colonoscopy, a recall may be placed into the system for a repeat colonoscopy in 1, 3 or 5 years time.
