Inguinal (Groin) Hernia Repair
This is generally done via a laparoscopic (keyhole) approach under a general anaesthetic.
There may be some circumstances where an open approach is preferable and Dr Gillespie will discuss the details specific to you when consenting for surgery.
The Procedure
For the keyhole approach, 3 small incisions are used to place ports. These allow the camera and instruments to be introduce. If you are having both sides fixed, this can be done via the same incisions. The hernia and contents (generally intra-abdominal fat, but sometimes bowel) is reduced. A piece of mesh is placed to decrease the risk of recurrence. The incisions are closed with dissolvable stitches beneath the skin.
Recovery
Most patients will be done as a day case, ie not requiring an overnight stay. Pain relief will be provided to you on discharge. The wounds will have the dressings intact for around one week and should be kept dry during this time. It is also important you avoid any heavy lifting or straining for the first month post procedure. Dr Gillespie will review you around this time as well.
The Patient Journey
Book an appointment
Call or email Dr Gillespie’s rooms to book an appointment. You will need a referral from your GP or specialist if you would like a Medicare rebate.
First Consult
You'll meet with Dr Gillespie to discuss your history and what options might be right for you. This consult is ideally in person so you can be examined.
Our secretaries can also discuss with you the option of using a private health insurance or under the waitlist as a public patient.
Preparation
If you would like to pursue surgery, a further workup may be required- for example imaging like CT or ultrasound. This is not always necessary.
Follow up
Dr Gillespie will review you in rooms in 4-6 weeks after surgery.
Surgery
Once the preparation is done, we will book you in for a date for your surgery! This may be a day case or involve a one-night stay in hospital.
You will be admitted on the day of surgery and the hospital will provide fasting instructions the day prior.
Discharge
Dr Gillespie will see you in recovery if you are going home on the same day, or on the ward if staying overnight.
You will be provided with pain relief on discharge.
